Our story
Sherwood and Hucknall Plumbing and Heating Supplies Ltd was established by its founder Martin O’loughlin, in 1989.
Martin was an entrepreneur from a young age, collecting bulrushes and daffodils to sell to his neighbours, and in the winter, he’d sell firewood. After attending Holy Cross Primary and Holgate Comprehensive School in Hucknall, he chose a career in plumbing, as his father didn’t want him to work in the mines. He apprenticed at Byron Heating and Plumbing and also worked for Black and Murray and Harold Woods.
Deciding to start his own business, Martin purchased a blue minivan for just £40. He quickly built a reputation for excellent customer service, even helping clients on Christmas Day. In 1989, he realised his dream of opening a showroom, launching Portland Plumbing on Portland Road in Hucknall with his business partner, Gerry. The business grew, and in 1993, he bought Wallace and Thorpe in Sherwood, renaming it Sherwood Plumbing and Heating Supplies. The business then became known as Sherwood and Hucknall Plumbing and Heating Supplies Ltd.
The Sherwood branch eventually outgrew its space and moved to a new location in New Basford, Nottingham, in 2005, where it remains today. Both branches feature trade counters and showrooms with over 45 displays, serving both professionals and the public. Martin’s remarkable work ethic built the company into a successful business that has operated for more than 35 years. He took great pride in being the managing director and owner, seeing his work as a hobby and enjoying friendly banter with his colleagues, family, and customers.
Though Martin has passed away, his family continues to run the business, building on the strong foundation he created. The staff members are dedicated to upholding his legacy, and they see the business as a tribute to his hard work and passion.
